Declan Rice struck eight minutes from time to earn Arsenal a 2–2 draw against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, preserving their unbeaten start to the Champions League group stage.

Rice’s finish completed a contest in which both teams surrendered the lead. Eberechi Eze opened the scoring for Arsenal before Alphonso Davies and Harry Kane turned the match in Bayern’s favour. Rice’s intervention left the visitors with seven points from three games, while Bayern moved to five.

For Mikel Arteta, the performance provided encouragement about Arsenal’s ability to compete away from home against strong European opposition. However, Bukayo Saka’s early departure through injury added concern ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.

## **Eze Responds to Arsenal’s Early Setback**

Arsenal were forced into a change after just ten minutes when Saka could no longer continue. Eze took his place and needed only a quarter of an hour to make his first decisive contribution.

Martin Ødegaard identified the substitute’s run beyond Bayern’s defence and delivered a pass that sent him into the penalty area. Eze finished across Manuel Neuer from a narrow angle in the 25th minute, with a VAR review overturning the initial offside decision.

The sequence illustrated the value of attacking the space behind Bayern’s defensive line. Ødegaard’s delivery and Eze’s movement allowed Arsenal to turn a forward pass into a clear shooting opportunity, demonstrating that Saka’s withdrawal had not removed their threat.

Bayern, though, had an equally effective combination of their own. Ten minutes later, Kane dropped into a deeper position and released Davies, whose run carried him beyond Arsenal’s defence before he finished past David Raya to restore parity.

## **Kane Extends His Scoring Run**

Bayern were missing the suspended Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich, who was absent following a family bereavement. Kane nevertheless remained central to their attacking play, contributing both the pass for the equaliser and the goal that put the hosts ahead.

The opening stages of the second half brought important saves at both ends. Neuer prevented Bruno Guimarães’s header from crossing the line, while Raya reacted sharply to keep out a close-range header as Bayern threatened to take control.

The decisive moment came when Kane’s shot struck Jurriën Timber’s arm inside the penalty area. Kane converted the resulting penalty to put Bayern 2–1 ahead.

This was Kane’s 16th goal in 23 games against Arsenal. His total in the Champions League now stands at 58. That put him ahead of Thomas Müller. Into eighth place on the list of top scorers in the competition not counting the qualifying games.

Kane has now scored in ten Champions League games. He is the second player to do that. Cristiano Ronaldo has the record with 11 games in a row between 2017 and 2018. Kane is one game away from matching that.

## **Rice and Gyökeres Deliver the Response**

Arteta introduced Viktor Gyökeres for Kai Havertz in the 69th minute, and the substitute subsequently helped produce Arsenal’s equaliser.

Noni Madueke contributed to the build-up before Rice exchanged passes with Gyökeres and continued into the penalty area. The midfielder then drove his finish beyond Neuer in the 82nd minute, bringing Arsenal level for the second time the score changed in their favour.

The timing of Rice’s run was the decisive feature. By continuing forward after releasing the ball, he gave Gyökeres a passing option beyond Bayern’s defensive line and created the space for his finish. Together with Eze’s opener, the move highlighted the direct influence of Arsenal’s substitutes on the result.

Arsenal finished with 54.1% possession and 14 attempts to Bayern’s 13. Both sides recorded five shots on target, figures consistent with a closely contested match in which neither attack was comfortably contained.

Kane acknowledged afterwards that Bayern had opportunities to strengthen their position after taking the lead, although he considered the draw a fair outcome overall. His assessment reflected a match in which both teams created enough chances to leave with more.

The result ended Arsenal’s sequence of 14 consecutive league-phase victories but extended their unbeaten run in that phase to 15 matches. Bayern’s unbeaten home record across Champions’ League group-stage and league-phase fixtures reached 40 games. Both totals follow from UEFA’s published pre-match records and the draw in Munich.

## **Saka Concern Overshadows a Valuable Point**

Speaking after the match, Arteta said Arsenal’s medical staff were concerned about the sharp pain that had forced Saka off. He described the injury as something that “doesn’t look good at all”, while stressing that further assessment was needed.

No recovery timetable was provided. Arsenal are already without Christos Tzolis through injury, making Saka’s availability a significant consideration as Arteta manages his attacking options.

Saturday’s meeting with Everton begins a run of five fixtures before the November international break, including a Premier League visit to Liverpool on 1 November. Eze’s goal and Gyökeres’s contribution offered reassurance about the alternatives available, but Arsenal must now balance the encouragement of their European performance with uncertainty over Saka.
