Manchester United marked their return to the Champions League with a commanding 4–0 victory over Sabah FC at Old Trafford, as Benjamin Šeško scored on his first start of the season to strengthen his case for a place in Michael Carrick’s side.

Matheus Cunha opened the scoring before Bruno Fernandes and Šeško struck late in the first half. Lisandro Martínez added a fourth after the interval, completing a comfortable European evening ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby.

The occasion marked United’s 300th match in Europe’s premier club competition and their first Champions League appearance in more than 1,000 days. After an initially lively showing from their Azerbaijani opponents, Carrick’s team ensured the result matched the significance of the occasion.

## **Cunha Breaks Through After Sabah’s Bright Start**

Sabah began positively, offering an early reminder that United still had to establish control rather than assume it would come automatically.

The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute when Patrick Dorgu delivered a cross for Cunha to convert. It was an important contribution from the forward, giving United the lead while providing a timely confidence boost before a considerably tougher domestic assignment.

Šeško then made it three, building on his goalscoring substitute appearance against Everton. Given his first start of the campaign, the striker responded with another goal and a sharp display that increased the competition for attacking places.

Dorgu enjoyed considerable freedom at left-back with Luke Shaw absent from the squad. United’s superiority allowed him to operate almost as a winger, and his cross for Cunha’s opener demonstrated the attacking value of that role.

The challenge against Manchester City is likely to require a different balance. Dorgu’s forward contribution was a clear positive against Sabah, but Sunday’s selection must also account for the greater defensive demands of the derby.

Further forward, Carrick has several decisions to make. Šeško has now scored against Everton and Sabah, Cunha has a goal to build on, and Marcus Rashford is also available.

Zirkzee’s performance adds another consideration. Rather than resolving every selection question, the comfortable victory gave United’s manager more evidence to weigh as he prepares his attacking line-up.

Nevertheless, United responded decisively. They took control before half-time, added another goal after making changes and received useful contributions from both starters and substitutes.
