Brighton’s Back Yourself Quiz: Welbeck, Van Hecke and João Pedro Test Their Knowledge
Questions about squad numbers, club history and international football turn self-belief into a points contest between three Brighton teammates.
The question is about Danny Welbeck, but the laughter begins before he gives his answer.
He scored his first senior England goal in 2012. Which European country was it against?
Welbeck’s teammates insist that he must know. He does: Belgium. The exchange captures Back Yourself, in which confidence determines how difficult a question each player will face.
How Does Back Yourself Work?
Welbeck, Jan Paul van Hecke and João Pedro sit behind separate buzzers with three categories: Brighton, teammates and international break. Questions are ranked from one to five, with harder questions carrying more points.
A player can protect his score with one point or trust his memory and move towards four or five. Every turn begins with a decision: how strongly does he back himself?
The 90-second film embedded on this page shows selected exchanges, not every turn or a complete final scoreboard. It therefore does not establish an overall winner.
Why Does João Pedro Begin with One Point?
João Pedro takes the opening turn and selects teammates at difficulty one. The others encourage him to raise the value, but he keeps the safer choice.
The question asks which Brighton player wears number 34. João Pedro names Joel Veltman and earns one point.
It explains the format neatly. Knowing the answer is only half the task; the player must first decide how many points to put behind his knowledge.
Van Hecke then chooses the same category at level four. He must remember when Solly March signed for Brighton. The discussion moves between 2012 and 2011 before the earlier year is accepted. Brighton’s own record confirms that March joined Albion from Lewes in 2011.
The answer demands an exact year, not simply recognition of a teammate.
Can Welbeck Handle the International Round?
Welbeck begins with an international-break question worth three points: in which year did Kaoru Mitoma make his senior Japan debut?
He answers 2021. The Japan Football Association’s official match report records that Mitoma won his first senior cap against Oman on 16 November 2021 and assisted the decisive goal.
Later, Welbeck takes the four-point question about his own England career. The FA records that his goal against Belgium on 2 June 2012 was his first for the senior national team.
That answer comes from lived experience. A teammate may recall a date; Welbeck can return to a match he played.
Which Brighton Memories Appear in the Quick-Fire Questions?
The edit accelerates through further rounds. Questions cover the capacity of the Amex Stadium, Brighton’s leading Premier League scorer, the year the club was founded and the two most expensive Albion selections in that season’s fantasy-football game.
Club history produces a clear response. Asked who Brighton faced in the 1983 FA Cup final, the players identify Manchester United. The first match ended 2–2 before United won the replay 4–0. Brighton’s official highlights preserve the drawn final, including the late chance that might have won the cup.
The questions move between daily familiarity and inherited history. A squad number can be seen in the dressing room. A final played decades before these footballers arrived must be learned and remembered.
What Makes the Brighton Quiz Work?
There is no physical challenge to distract from an uncertain answer. Each player chooses a category, announces a value and waits to discover whether his confidence was justified.
The structure leaves room for hesitation, persuasion and teammates hiding what they know. João Pedro refuses to raise his opening difficulty. Van Hecke searches for the exact year. Welbeck laughs as his own career becomes the subject.
The points create competition, but nobody treats a mistake seriously. The humour comes from the choices around the questions as much as the facts.
When Did Welbeck, Van Hecke and João Pedro Take the Quiz?
Betway Arabia published the edit in March 2025, when all three players represented Brighton. It has since become a record of a squad that changed.
João Pedro signed for Chelsea in July 2025. Van Hecke joined Tottenham Hotspur on 18 June 2026. Brighton then confirmed that Welbeck moved to Chelsea on 1 August 2026 after making 201 appearances and scoring 51 goals for Albion.
Back Yourself was created through Brighton’s partnership with Betway, which the club identifies as its Official Global Betting Partner. The full short film is already embedded on this page.
Betway displays its current football offering in its football section. Participation is restricted to adults who meet the legal and account requirements applying to them, while the fixtures and markets presented may differ according to the event and jurisdiction.
Backing an answer in the quiz costs nothing; backing a selection involves real money. Before taking part, set aside only an amount whose loss would not affect everyday spending. A losing result is never a reason to increase the next stake. Betway’s responsible-gambling tools can help anyone who wants to reduce, suspend or regain control of their activity.
