Erling Haaland scored both goals as Manchester City opened their 2026/27 Champions League campaign with a 2–0 victory over Porto at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday, 8 September. Haaland scored shortly after half-time and again in stoppage time to give Enzo Maresca the first win in the champions league as a Manchester City coach.

The result extended Maresca’s opening run to four consecutive victories following three Premier League wins. Yet, while City created comfortably the better chances, their inability to maintain control throughout the second half left the outcome uncertain until Haaland’s late intervention.

Diogo Costa Keeps City Waiting

City had opportunities to establish a first-half advantage, but a combination of Haaland’s missed chances and Diogo Costa’s excellent goalkeeping kept Porto level.

Costa repelled a powerful Haaland header before the striker sent another promising headed opportunity over the crossbar. Costa then produced an outstanding double save, stopping Haaland’s effort from inside the penalty area before recovering quickly to deny Rayan Cherki on the rebound. City had several attempts, but their finishing lacked the precision required to score.

Haaland Breaks Through Before Porto Respond

The deadlock lasted only two minutes beyond the interval. Haaland held off Jakub Kiwior to meet Enzo Fernández’s delivery, directing his header in off the post in the 47th minute. After a frustrating opening half, the forward had given City the advantage their earlier opportunities had promised.

Alan Varela curled a shot narrowly beyond the far post from the edge of the penalty area, offering a reminder that a one-goal lead left little room for error.

Gianluigi Donnarumma then created an avoidable moment of concern when William Gomes closed down his attempted clearance. The ball ran safely away, but the incident illustrated how City’s own mistakes were helping Porto remain competitive.

The hosts’ pressure nevertheless produced little in the way of clear chances. Opta recorded five Porto attempts, none on target, against City’s 20 shots and 10 on target. The expected-goals figures, which assess chance quality, also favoured the visitors by 2.31 to 0.22. Those numbers support a deserved City victory, while distinguishing Porto’s improved second-half presence from sustained danger in front of goal.

Late Finish Completes a Milestone Night

Haaland finally removed the remaining uncertainty in the first minute of added time. Rayan Aït-Nouri reached the byline and supplied a cutback that the striker guided into the bottom corner, securing the points after a more demanding second half than City’s early dominance had suggested.

The double also brought significant personal milestones. Haaland reached 36 Champions League goals for City in 40 appearances, drawing level with Sergio Agüero as the club’s leading scorer in the competition. Across his Champions League career, he now has 59 goals in 59 matches.

His overall City tally rose to 167 goals from 203 appearances, moving him into third place on the club’s all-time scoring list. Only Agüero and Eric Brook remain ahead of him.

Encouragement for Maresca, With Room to Improve

There was substance to the result beyond the three points. City ended Porto’s 33-match unbeaten home run and became the first visiting side to win at the Estádio do Dragão in 2026. For Maresca, it also represented a contrast with last season, when he failed to win any of his three away Champions League matches as Chelsea head coach.

Maresca’s own assessment was positive. He highlighted the opportunities City created before half-time, acknowledged Costa’s contribution and said he could see his team improving from match to match. His side’s ability to restrict Porto’s chances provided a reasonable foundation for that view, even if their possession became less reliable after taking the lead.

City now are looking forward to the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Sunday, 13 September. They will enter the game with a perfect record under Enzo Maresca.
