Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen after reports suggested that he took the decision after head coach Jorge Jesus’s press conference, promising to explain his reasons for leaving.
He announced his departure on Wednesday, 30 September, ahead of Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark.
Ronaldo Promises to Explain His Departure
In a statement on Instagram, Ronaldo said he would explain his decision to Portuguese supporters at a later date, and wished the entire team good luck without exceptions.
“In due course, I will tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind my departure,” he wrote.
Jesus Defends His Selection Decisions
Earlier on Wednesday, Jesus had attempted to play down reports of a dispute, insisting “there was no incident whatsoever” and saying Ronaldo was expected to return to training before the Denmark game.
Jesus acknowledged that Ronaldo had been told he was likely to feature against Norway, but explained that the circumstances of the match led the coach to leave the forward on the bench.
“I’m the one who makes the decisions and everybody knows that,” Jesus said.
Reuters separately reported that Jesus acknowledged Ronaldo had been angry about not playing, although the coach considered the matter resolved.
Jesus previously worked with Ronaldo at Al Nassr. Despite his expectation that the captain would rejoin the group, Ronaldo did not participate in Wednesday’s session and subsequently announced his departure.
Norway Omission Follows Frustrating Wales Appearance
Ronaldo started Portugal’s opening Nations League victory over Wales in Lisbon but was unable to find the net. He missed several opportunities and had a second-half effort ruled out for offside following a VAR review before being substituted.
João Félix scored the only goal as Portugal secured a 1–0 win, with Ronaldo making his 234th international appearance.
The captain then remained an unused substitute in the 2–1 victory over Norway. Gonçalo Ramos, who started in his place, scored the winning goal.
Those results gave Portugal six points from their opening two matches in League A Group 4, providing a successful start to their Nations League campaign despite the uncertainty surrounding their captain. UEFA.com
Portugal Continue Preparations for Denmark
According to Reuters, the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed Ronaldo’s departure and said preparations would continue with the remaining 24 players.
Portugal face Denmark on Thursday, 1 October, before hosting Norway on Sunday, 4 October. The two fixtures offer an opportunity to build on their victories over Wales and Norway. UEFA.com
Ronaldo’s International Future Remains Unclear
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.
The Al Nassr forward had already spoken during this camp about considering international retirement after the World Cup. He is also pursuing 1,000 career goals, with his reported tally of 979 leaving him 21 short of the milestone.
However, leaving the training camp does not mean his career with the national team is over. His statement did not explicitly announce international retirement, leaving his longer-term intentions unresolved as supporters await the explanation he has promised.
