Manchester City recorded their sixth consecutive Premier League victory with a 3–0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, 11 October 2026, taking control after Ryan Gravenberch’s dismissal transformed a closely contested match. Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored the visitors’ goals.

The result came in City’s first appearance since an independent commission found the club guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules. City have appealed the ruling and continue to deny wrongdoing, with the disciplinary process remaining separate from their strong start on the pitch.

Liverpool Make City Work for Control

A hostile reception greeted City during the warm-up and before kick-off, and Liverpool carried that intensity into the opening exchanges. The hosts challenged aggressively and disrupted the visitors’ rhythm, forcing Enzo Maresca’s side to withstand sustained pressure before establishing greater control towards half-time.

Liverpool threatened again after the interval. Gianluigi Donnarumma produced important saves from Lewis Koumas and Gravenberch, while Alexis Mac Allister sent an effort narrowly wide. Those interventions helped preserve the platform from which City would eventually build their victory. Manchester City FC

The visitors’ expected-goals total stood at just 0.16 before the sending-off, according to Sky Sports. That figure provides an important qualification to the scoreline: City had generated limited attacking threat before gaining their numerical advantage, rather than dominating the contest throughout. Liverpool’s pressure and Donnarumma’s contribution were significant parts of the story.

Gravenberch’s Dismissal Opens the Way

The balance shifted just after the hour when Gravenberch received a second yellow card for a challenge on Doku. Gary Neville, commentating for Sky Sports, described the decision as “very soft”. Whatever the debate over the booking, its impact on the match was immediate.

Haaland put City ahead in the 65th minute, only two minutes and 36 seconds after the dismissal. Doku’s attempt was blocked by Mac Allister, but the loose ball fell to the Norwegian, who struck decisively past Alisson to break the deadlock.

Doku then supplied the second goal in the 68th minute, cutting inside and curling his shot into the top corner. Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th, collecting Joško Gvardiol’s pass before using close control to evade Jeremie Frimpong and finish beneath Alisson. Three goals in a sharply contrasting second-half spell settled the outcome. Manchester City FC

The dismissal created the opportunity, but City still needed to exploit it. Their finishing after Gravenberch’s departure was substantially more decisive than their earlier attacking play, turning a goalless contest into a comfortable lead before Liverpool could regain their footing.

Financial Ruling Remains Under Appeal

The wider circumstances gave the fixture an unusual significance. The commission’s findings concerned financial-rule breaches during the period from 2009/10 to 2017/18. City lodged their formal appeal on 1 October and maintain that the ruling contains material errors of law, principle and fact.

The Premier League has said sanctions will be considered at a further hearing. The Anfield result therefore changes City’s sporting position, not the status of the proceedings: the commission has issued its findings, the club disputes them, and the appeal process remains unresolved.

Speaking to Sky Sports afterwards, Maresca stressed that his players would need to handle similar receptions at future away matches while concentrating on their performances. “Our noise is to win games like today,” he said, directing attention towards the response his team could deliver on the field.

Perfect Start Strengthens City’s Early Position

City finished the match on 18 points, three clear of second-placed Arsenal. Liverpool’s first league defeat left Andoni Iraola’s side ninth and nine points behind the leaders, increasing the importance of converting competitive performances into victories.

There was also historical significance to the result. Following February’s 2–1 victory at Anfield, City have now won consecutive league visits to Liverpool for the first time since January 1953—a notable achievement at a ground where success has often proved elusive. Manchester City FC

For Liverpool, the frustration lies in how quickly a promising performance unravelled. For City, the result demonstrated both the value of remaining level through difficult periods and the attacking quality available once the match opened up. The red card was pivotal, but the visitors’ response ensured it became decisive.
