Paris Saint-Germain ended Barcelona’s winning start to the season with a 4–2 Champions League victory at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, as late goals from Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz finally separated the teams.
Barcelona had arrived with 11 victories from their opening 11 competitive matches. Goals from Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal twice brought Hansi Flick’s side level, but the reigning European champions responded decisively to secure their third win in this season’s competition.
Doué Converts PSG’s First-Half Pressure
The opening exchanges quickly established the attacking character of the evening. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck the post in the second minute, while Barcelona threatened through Dani Olmo and Raphinha, the latter forcing Matvey Safonov into a save.
Joan García was repeatedly called into action at the other end. Ferran Torres replaced Ousmane Dembélé and had several chances against his former club but Garcia denied him.
PSG finally managed to score in the 38th minute. A wrong pass, from Barcelona gave PSG the chance to get the ball back allowing Désiré Doué to move forward and open the scoring.
Barcelona almost responded before the break when Pedri passed to Fermín López. Safonov stopped the midfielder. The visitors went into the time break one goal behind with both goalkeepers having already made important contributions.
Barcelona Equalise Twice Before the Decisive Late Goals
Espart supplied Barcelona’s first equaliser in the 55th minute. The young full-back moved forward to receive a pass from Fermín and finished from the right side of the area, rewarding a more assertive spell from the visitors.
Gavi subsequently tested Safonov as Barcelona sought to build on that response. PSG, however, continued to create chances of their own. Torres hit the post before Lucas Hernandez headed in from a corner in the 72nd minute to restore the home side’s advantage.
Yamal brought Barcelona back again seven minutes later. Capitalising on a defensive error, he burst into the penalty area and scored from a narrow angle to make it 2–2.
Barcelona had little time to consolidate. In the 81st minute, Vitinha controlled a partially cleared ball on his chest and struck from outside the area, putting PSG ahead for the third time.
Ruiz then supplied the finish that removed the remaining uncertainty. Five minutes after Vitinha’s goal, the Spain midfielder met Achraf Hakimi’s delivery for a close-range fourth, leaving Barcelona unable to mount another recovery.
The speed of PSG’s response to Yamal’s goal proved central to the outcome. Barcelona had twice demonstrated their ability to recover, but neither equaliser became the foundation for sustained control.
Forty Attempts Reflect an Open Contest
Opta recorded 22 attempts for PSG and 18 for Barcelona, with the teams producing 11 opportunities classified as “big chances”: six for the hosts and five for the visitors. García finished with 10 saves, underlining how frequently PSG tested Barcelona’s last line of defence.
The figures suggest that the scoreline reflected a match rich in opportunities, with both sides finding routes towards goal. Barcelona’s attacking contribution kept them competitive, while PSG’s late finishing settled a contest that remained level until the final nine minutes of normal time.
The victory also extended PSG’s unbeaten Champions League sequence to 13 matches, comprising nine wins and four draws. According to Opta, that matched the club’s previous record run in the competition, set between October 2012 and November 2013.
Injuries Add Concern Ahead of El Clásico
The result came with fitness concerns for both teams. Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d’Or holder, departed inside the opening 20 minutes with a suspected hamstring injury. Kvaratskhelia later needed assistance leaving the field after sustaining a knock, while Olmo’s first-half withdrawal added to Barcelona’s existing selection problems.
Flick’s side were already without defenders Eric García and Jules Koundé in Paris. Barcelona had confirmed a thigh injury for García and an ankle sprain for Koundé before the match, with the latter’s availability for El Clásico dependent on his recovery.
Barcelona visit Real Madrid on Sunday, 25 October, as LaLiga leaders facing an immediate examination of their response to a first defeat.
In Europe, PSG have nine points and 14 goals from three matches, following earlier victories over Slovan Bratislava and Manchester City. Barcelona remain on six points. Both return to Champions League action on 3 November, when PSG travel to Villarreal and Barcelona host Aston Villa.
