Harry Kane ended England’s 25-year wait for a Ballon d’Or after scoring 73 goals and received the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or at the London Palladium on Monday, 26 October. Harry Kane became the first English player to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001. Kane earned this honor after scoring 73 goals for club and country.

Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, who took second and third places. At 33, Kane adds the award to a career that has taken him from loan spells, in football to setting scoring records winning domestic titles and gaining international recognition.

A Season of Goals and Trophies

Kane contributed to Bayern’s 2025–26 campaign in every competition. Kane scored 61 goals in 51 appearances, including 36 in the Bundesliga 10 in the German Cup 14 in the Champions League and 1 in the German Supercup. Kane’s league tally also earned him the European Golden Shoe for the time in his career.

Those goals helped Bayern complete a Bundesliga and German Cup double. Kane scored in every round of the cup competition and even scored a hat‑trick against Stuttgart in the final.

Another 12 goals for England brought Kane’s combined total to 73 in 65 matches. Six of those goals came at the 2026 World Cup. The figures underline the breadth of Kane’s season: sustained domestic scoring was accompanied by contributions in European competition and, on the international stage. Kane’s six goals at the 2026 World Cup helped England secure third place, their strongest finish at the tournament since 1966. Kane also received the Gerd Müller Trophy at the London ceremony, recognising his scoring achievements for Bayern and England during the award period.

A Place in English and Bayern History

Kane becomes the fifth English player to win the men’s Ballon d’Or. Sir Stanley Matthews claimed the inaugural award in 1956, Sir Bobby Charlton followed in 1966, and Kevin Keegan won successive editions in 1978 and 1979. Owen’s success in 2001 had been England’s most recent victory until Kane’s recognition in London.

His achievement also ends a lengthy wait for Bayern. The club had not produced a winner since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. Kane now joins Rummenigge, Gerd Müller and Franz Beckenbauer among the players to have received the honour while representing the German club.

Kane Credits the Players Around Him

Presented with the trophy by Brazil great Ronaldo, Kane spoke emotionally about receiving the award in London.

“I’m almost speechless.” he said afterwards. England

Kane praised his Bayern teammates Michael Olise and Luis Díaz, alongside England colleagues Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham, for helping create the opportunities behind his scoring record.

From Loan Spells to Football’s Leading Individual Award

Kane’s acceptance speech returned to the persistence required during the early stages of his career. His development included loans at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City before he established himself in Tottenham’s first team. An ankle injury limited his opportunities at Norwich, while his breakthrough at Spurs came gradually.

By August 2023, when Tottenham announced his move to Bayern, Kane had already become Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading goalscorer with 280 goals in 435 matches. His journey to Germany marked a chapter following many years of individual success in England.

Kane expressed his gratitude to Tottenham, Bayern and England. He shared his story as a source of inspiration for players who face ups and downs in their development. He highlighted the effort and challenges that came with his career remembering that his path to success required a lot of patience.

The evening had begun with confusion after the award’s website prematurely published separate articles naming Kane, Mbappé and Yamal as the winners.
