Atlético Madrid’s Moments That Matter: Griezmann, Correa and Riquelme Look Back

For Riquelme, Griezmann and Correa, the people around an award, a goal or a title are what make it last.

At half-time in Valladolid, Atlético trail and their title hopes are in danger. Correa squeezes an equalizer through the defence. Suárez scores next. At the final whistle, Atlético are champions.

The result belongs in the record books. Correa’s memory is more personal.

He takes a shirt from the title-winning occasion, asks his teammates to sign it and brings it to his mother, who is undergoing cancer treatment. Her happiness, he explains in Betway’s Moments That Matter, is what stays with him.

The person who shared the achievement gives the moment its meaning.

What Do the Players Choose as Their Defining Moments?

The embedded film asks Antoine Griezmann, Correa and Rodrigo Riquelme to look beyond goals and trophies.

Riquelme chooses the night he received a Champions League Player of the Match award. Griezmann talks about friendship, supporters and the joy he needs to perform. Correa returns to Atlético’s 2020/21 league title and the happiness it brought his mother.

Together, the answers create three kinds of memory: recognition earned, friendship experienced and success carried home.

Why Does Riquelme’s Award Belong at Home?

On 28 November 2023, Atlético beat Feyenoord 3–1 in Rotterdam to reach the Champions League round of 16. UEFA named Riquelme Player of the Match.

For an academy graduate who had spent three seasons away on loan, the trophy represented more than one performance. He entered Atlético’s academy in 2010, then went on loan to Bournemouth, Mirandés and Girona before returning to the first team in 2023.

In the film, however, he turns the attention towards his parents. The trophy now sits in their home. Riquelme dedicated it to them for the unconditional support behind his journey. His name is on the award, but he does not tell the Rotterdam story as a solo achievement.

Why Does Griezmann Talk About Joy?

Griezmann had many individual moments available. January 2024 brought another landmark. Goal number 174 put Griezmann ahead of Luis Aragonés as Atlético’s all-time leading scorer.

Yet his answer is not built around one finish. He describes friends moving in the same direction, playing for the teammate beside them and the supporters watching. He names “Roro” Riquelme as a companion for jokes and says he cannot produce his best football without that happiness.

A joke can ease the strain of a demanding season. Familiarity also makes communication quicker on the pitch. Griezmann remembers the environment around his goals rather than selecting one of them.

Why Is Correa’s Memory So Personal?

Valladolid had led at half-time on the last day of the 2020/21 season. In the 57th minute, Correa found the equalizer, and Suárez followed with the goal that made it 2–1. Atlético left the pitch with league title number 11.

Correa does not focus on the technique behind his goal. In the film, he says that his mother was receiving treatment for cancer at the time. He brought her a shirt from the occasion carrying the squad’s signatures.

“That day she was very happy,” he says.

Millions watched the goal, but the memory he chooses is of sharing what followed with one member of his family.

What Do the Three Answers Reveal About Atlético?

None of the players presents an important moment as his alone. Riquelme’s award stays with his parents. Griezmann’s chosen memory is the company around him: friends, teammates and supporters. Correa turns a championship shirt into a gift for his mother.

The film does not suggest that every season or dressing-room moment is joyful. It shows that achievements are often remembered through the people standing around them.

The result begins each story. Family, friendship and gratitude decide what remains after the celebrations have ended.

Why Is the Film Now an Atlético Time Capsule?

At the time of filming, all three wore Atlético colours. Their careers have since taken them away from Madrid.

Riquelme left after 75 senior appearances, signing for Real Betis. Correa’s move to Tigres UANL came after 469 competitive matches; only five players had represented Atlético more often. Orlando City announced Griezmann’s signing in March 2026, with his contract beginning in July. He left Atlético as the club’s record scorer.

In retrospect, the film catches the point at which those three careers still overlapped in Madrid. Their reflections remain meaningful even though the squad has changed.
