Manchester United winless run extended to five matches as Atletico Madrid secured a 2–0 Champions League victory on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. Pablo Barrios opened the scoring in the minute and Ademola Lookman added the second goal. Leny Yoro’s red card caused Atletico Madrid to finish the match a player short leaving Michael Carrick’s side with ten men.The defeat followed United’s 1–1 Premier League draw against Tottenham and brought further scrutiny of their defensive organization and finishing. The discussion widened after the game when Lisandro Martinez questioned the club’s summer recruitment, arguing that responsibility for the team’s difficulties extended beyond the manager.

Barrios Punishes United’s Slow Start

Atletico immediately exposed the space behind United’s defence. A straightforward ball over the top created an opportunity to score and Barrios finished the move to give the hosts an advantage before the visitors had settled into the contest. It was an early demonstration of the defensive vulnerability United had needed to address.

Carrick’s players nevertheless created opportunities to recover. Bryan Mbeumo created a threat deflected narrowly wide and later forced Jan Oblak into a save from an angle inside the penalty area. Carlos Baleba also had an opening from a corner but directed his header straight at the Atletico goalkeeper.

Atletico thought they had doubled their lead shortly before half-time when Johnny Cardoso scored from outside the box. However, referee Glenn Nyberg reviewed the build-up and disallowed the goal for a handball by Marcos Llorente, whose arm was judged to have been in an unnatural position.

Yoro Dismissal Leaves United Facing a Greater Challenge

United were still trailing by a single goal when Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute. Following an on-field review, Nyberg ruled that the defender had denied Jonathan David an obvious goalscoring opportunity during a coming together just inside United’s half.

Under IFAB’s Law 12, that assessment involves more than the severity of the challenge. Officials must consider the distance from goal, the direction of play, the likelihood of the attacker gaining or retaining control, and the positions and numbers of other defenders and attackers. Those criteria explain why an incident well outside the penalty area can still result in a dismissal.

Atletico made their numerical advantage count shortly afterwards. Substitute Lookman reacted to the rebound after Senne Lammens stopped David’s effort, converting in the 79th minute to establish a two-goal cushion. United’s missed opportunities had kept them chasing the match; the second goal left them with little prospect of recovering it.

Martinez Questions Recruitment as Carrick Urges Focus

The post-match reaction brought United’s squad-building decisions into the discussion. Speaking to Amazon Prime, Martinez called for greater support from the club’s leadership and singled out Jason Wilcox.

“I expect more from our technical director,” the defender said, while also acknowledging that the players needed to deliver more themselves.

His criticism concerned whether United had strengthened sufficiently to compete, rather than an absence of transfer activity.

Carrick declined to respond in detail to the interview, explaining that he had not watched it. He acknowledged the disappointment within the squad but stressed the importance of moving forward and concentrating on Sunday’s Premier League visit to Leeds United.

Atletico Get Their European Campaign Moving

The victory delivered Atletico’s first points of the Champions League league phase following their opening defeat at Liverpool. United remained on three points after beginning their campaign with a 4–0 win over Sabah, making this a setback to their early European progress rather than a decisive blow to their qualification prospects.

It was another successful European meeting with United for Diego Simeone’s side. Atletico also eliminated the English club in the 2022 Champions League round of 16, when Renan Lodi’s goal secured a 1–0 victory at Old Trafford and a 2–1 aggregate success. UEFA.com
