Julián Álvarez’s future is still uncertain in this transfer window after Atlético Madrid ruled out negotiations with Barcelona, leaving the Argentina striker with a choice between remaining in the Spanish capital or considering a possible return to the Premier League with Arsenal.
Álvarez had been interested in joining Barcelona, whose president Joan Laporta showed that Barcelona is still interested this week. However, Atletico, have made it clear that they will not discuss a deal with their La Liga rivals, regardless of the potential transfer fee.
That position has significantly narrowed Álvarez’s options. Arsenal remain a possible destination, although the Premier League champions currently regard completing a deal before the transfer deadline as unlikely unless the player gives a clear indication that he wants to move there.
Álvarez missed Atlético training on Wednesday and Thursday because of illness. His absence was understood to be unrelated to the transfer situation.
Atlético Close the Door on Barcelona

With Barcelona ruled out and a transfer to another major Spanish rival highly improbable, Arsenal have emerged as the most realistic external option available to Álvarez.

Arsenal continue to consider the transfer difficult to complete and would require significant encouragement from Álvarez before formally pursuing negotiations. The financial demands involved in signing one of Atlético’s most valuable players would also make any late-window agreement complicated.

The Argentine was booed as he left the pitch during Atlético’s 2-2 draw against Villarreal on Sunday, with his publicly reported desire for a move contributing to growing tension around his future.

Reports in England have suggested Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres could interest Atlético in Álvarez’s deal.
Atlético had also shown interest in Nicolas Jackson, although the forward is instead expected to join Aston Villa.
Any potential movement involving Gyökeres would add considerable complexity to discussions. Arsenal would have to determine whether having Álvarez will be in place to enhance their attacking structure, while Atlético would need to ensure they had a good replacement before allowing one of their leading forwards to depart.
Álvarez’s Premier League Experience
A move to Arsenal would represent a return to English football for Álvarez, who previously spent two seasons with Manchester City.
He joined City from River Plate in 2022 and became part of Pep Guardiola’s treble-winning squad in his first campaign, collecting the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. That success followed his role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, where he scored four goals during the tournament.
Álvarez eventually left Manchester City for Atlético Madrid in 2024 after finding regular central attacking opportunities difficult to secure alongside Erling Haaland.
His combination of pressing intensity, movement, finishing and ability to operate in several attacking positions would provide Arsenal with a different profile in the final third. His previous Premier League experience would also reduce some of the adaptation concerns normally associated with a major overseas signing.
However, Arsenal’s interest remains conditional rather than advanced, and Atlético currently retain control over the player’s immediate future.
