Saka Scores and Seals the Win for Arsenal at Aston Villa 

Bukayo Saka scored the winner as Arsenal continued their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Saka scored in the 59th minute, converting Riccardo Calafiori’s assist from close range after Arsenal had increased the pressure on Aston Villa.

Arsenal have now collected six points from their opening two Premier League matches and two clean sheets, after they beat Coventry 3-0.

Villa showed some improvement in their performance after a huge defeat last week at Brighton in their opening game, but wasn’t good enough for them to earn their first point of the season.

Villa Respond Positively After Brighton Defeat

Emery made major changes following Villa’s difficult start to the season, with goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and striker Nicolas Jackson showing up for their debut.

Villa looked more competitive than they had at Brighton and created the first major opportunity of the evening after 12 minutes.

Emiliano Buendía found space outside the Arsenal penalty area before sending a powerful effort beyond David Raya and against the crossbar. It proved to be Villa’s clearest opening as Arsenal’s defence gradually showed greater control.

Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven remained the same as the previous game, and the champions increasingly dictated possession without finding an immediate way through Villa’s compact defensive line.

Set pieces provided Arsenal with several chances to apply pressure, but they failed to score from them in the first half. 

Christos Tzolis also had a difficult game where he received a yellow card and was replaced by Eberechi Eze at half-time as Arteta looked for greater attacking fluency without risking a second yellow.

Eze Introduction Gives Arsenal Greater Threat

The substitution helped alter the rhythm of the match.

Eze provided Arsenal with another player capable of receiving possession between Villa’s midfield and defensive lines, while Saka became increasingly influential from the right.

Arsenal appeared to have their breakthrough from the penalty spot early in the second half when Ian Maatsen challenged Saka near the edge of the area.

The initial decision awarded Arsenal a penalty, but VAR established that the contact had occurred outside the box. Martin Ødegaard subsequently sent the resulting free-kick narrowly wide.

Villa’s reprieve lasted only a few minutes.

Eze helped move the ball towards Calafiori, who advanced into the penalty area before driving a low cross across the goal. Saka reacted quickest, getting ahead of the Villa defence and forcing the ball beyond Suzuki from close range in the 59th minute.

It was another decisive contribution from Arsenal’s leading wide attacker and followed his goal against Coventry in the opening round of the season.

Arsenal Show the Depth of Premier League Champions

Arsenal had opportunities to extend their advantage after taking the lead, with Kai Havertz denied by Suzuki during one attack, although the forward was subsequently flagged offside.

Suzuki nevertheless produced an encouraging Premier League debut. The Japan international demonstrated confident distribution with both feet and handled much of Arsenal’s aerial pressure effectively despite eventually being beaten by Saka.

As Villa searched for a route back into the contest, Arteta was able to turn to the depth of his squad.

Bruno Guimarães and Mikel Merino were introduced to reinforce the midfield, while Ezri Konsa made his Arsenal debut against his former club in the closing stages following his summer move from Villa.

The substitutions allowed Arsenal to manage the final phase of the match effectively as Villa struggled to create a clear opening.

That defensive control continued an impressive beginning to the campaign for the champions. Arsenal have taken maximum points from their opening two Premier League fixtures without conceding a goal.

Villa Improvement Still Leaves Emery Without a Point

There were positives for Emery despite the result.

Villa were significantly more organised than during their opening-weekend collapse at Brighton and restricted Arsenal to a narrow victory rather than allowing the game to become stretched.

However, their problems in the final third remain an early concern. Villa have now failed to score a goal in two Premier League matches.

That attacking issue leaves Villa without a goal or a point after two matches, despite Buendía coming within centimetres of changing the complexion of this contest when he struck the crossbar.

Integrating players such as Jackson and Suzuki into a heavily altered squad will therefore be an important part of Emery’s work over the coming weeks.

Saka Delivers on Landmark Night for Arteta

For Arsenal the game wasn’t about dominating their opponents with dominance. It was more about showing the kind of control and strength that comes with being defending champions. 

The occasion also represented Mikel Arteta’s 250th Premier League match as Arsenal manager. The Spaniard marked the milestone with his 151st league victory in charge, according to post-match reporting.

Saka ultimately supplied the difference.

With two goals from Arsenal’s opening two league matches, the winger has begun the new campaign in decisive form. His movement for the winner was simple but effective: anticipate Calafiori’s delivery, attack the space in front of the defender and finish from close range.
