Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the transfer of captain Cristian Romero, with the Argentina international closing in on a move to LaLiga after months of speculation over his future.
According to Sky Sports, the package is worth approximately €40 million (£34.2m), including add-ons, with Tottenham also securing a 15 per cent sell-on clause. Atletico have tracked Romero for an extended period and have now moved decisively to bring the 28-year-old to Madrid, where he is expected to work under compatriot Diego Simeone.
Romero had attracted interest from elsewhere, including Inter Milan, but Atletico emerged as his preferred destination. Tottenham were prepared to sanction his departure despite the defender having signed a new long-term contract during the previous campaign.
The transfer is set to bring an eventful five-year spell in north London to an end and represents another significant step in Tottenham’s extensive summer rebuild.
Romero Set to End Five-Year Tottenham Spell
Romero initially arrived from Atalanta in 2021 and went on to establish himself as one of Tottenham’s most prominent defenders.
Including his initial loan season, the Argentine has made 156 appearances for Spurs across all competitions. He also captained Tottenham during their 2025 Europa League final victory over Manchester United, ending the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy.
His performances in that European campaign underlined why he has long been regarded as an elite-level centre-back. UEFA’s Technical Observer Group named Romero the 2024/25 Europa League Player of the Season after he helped captain Tottenham to the trophy. He was also named Player of the Match in the final against Manchester United and selected in UEFA’s Team of the Season. Romero’s international pedigree is equally significant. He has been part of an Argentina generation that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles and the 2022 Finalissima, giving Atletico a defender with extensive experience in major international and European matches.
Strong Performances Accompanied by Disciplinary Concerns
Romero’s Tottenham career has also been defined by an aggressive defensive style that has occasionally crossed the disciplinary line.
During the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, he scored four goals and provided one assist in 23 appearances, playing 1,872 league minutes. He was also shown nine yellow cards and sent off twice.
Those dismissals included a late second yellow against Liverpool in December and a straight red card against Manchester United in February. His second sending-off resulted in a four-match suspension at a crucial stage of Tottenham’s fight against relegation.
Romero has accumulated four Premier League red cards during his Tottenham career, illustrating the risk attached to the front-foot defending that is also one of his strongest attributes.
The defender’s final campaign in north London became increasingly difficult beyond the disciplinary issues. Tottenham endured a turbulent season and only guaranteed Premier League survival with victory over Everton on the final day. Romero had been receiving treatment in Argentina for a knee injury shortly before that match before returning to attend the relegation decider.
Atletico Move Looks Natural for Romero and Simeone
From a tactical perspective, Romero appears well suited to Simeone’s approach.
The Argentine is comfortable defending aggressively away from his own penalty area, stepping forward to challenge attackers and carrying possession into midfield. His experience operating in both three-man and four-man defensive structures should also give Atletico additional flexibility.
His ability in possession is an important part of his profile. Romero is capable of breaking the opposition’s first defensive line with progressive passing, while his willingness to engage attackers early can help teams defend higher up the pitch.
Atletico will nevertheless need to balance those qualities against his disciplinary record and recent injury history.
Simeone has repeatedly expressed admiration for his compatriot, and the move gives Romero an opportunity to begin a new chapter in a league he has not previously played in after spells in Argentina, Italy and England. The combination of his intensity, international experience and comfort in physically demanding contests makes the partnership an intriguing one.
Tottenham Continue Major Defensive Overhaul
Romero’s departure also reflects the scale of Tottenham’s squad restructuring under Roberto De Zerbi.
Spurs have already strengthened their centre-back options with Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, reducing the sporting impact of allowing their captain to leave. Van Hecke arrived from Brighton earlier in the summer, while Tottenham have also made major investments elsewhere across the squad.
There will nevertheless be debate around the fee.
Tottenham are accepting roughly £34m for a 28-year-old World Cup-winning defender who remained under a long-term contract, while Brighton paid a larger fee for highly rated young centre-back Luka Vuskovic earlier this summer. The comparison is unusual, although age, destination, player preference and the significant difference in spending power between Premier League clubs and much of continental Europe all influence transfer valuations.
Tottenham themselves originally invested around £42m in bringing Romero from Atalanta, meaning the immediate transfer fee is below what they committed to acquiring him.
The 15 per cent sell-on clause could provide additional value should Atletico eventually transfer Romero elsewhere.
A Significant Change for Both Clubs
For Atletico, the agreement delivers an experienced defender entering what should still be the prime years of his career. Romero arrives with Premier League, Champions League and international experience as well as a major-tournament record few defenders can match.
For Tottenham, his exit represents another break with the squad that endured two successive difficult Premier League campaigns.
Romero leaves behind a complicated legacy: a Europa League-winning captain capable of commanding performances at the highest level, but also a defender whose suspensions, injuries and inconsistent availability became increasingly significant during Tottenham’s struggles.
Atletico will now hope Simeone can maximise the qualities that made Romero one of Argentina’s most important defenders while limiting the disciplinary problems that periodically undermined his Tottenham career.
