Rodri Set for Barcelona After Manchester City Accept £65.4m Bid

Rodri is closing in on a return to Spanish football according to Sky Sports, Manchester City have accepted a £65.4 million offer from Barcelona for Rodri. The 30-year-old is expected to undergo a medical before completing the move and has agreed terms on a four-year contract with Barcelona. Manchester City had hoped to extend Rodri’s stay beyond 2027, but with only one year remaining on his contract, Barcelona’s improved offer ultimately convinced the Premier League club to sanction his departure.

Rodri leaves England with an exceptional collection of individual and team honors. During seven seasons at City, he made 298 appearances and won 13 trophies, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League. He also scored the decisive goal against Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final, completing City’s historic treble.

His international achievements have further strengthened his standing among the leading midfielders of his generation. Rodri won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 after helping Spain claim UEFA Euro 2024, where he was also named Player of the Tournament. He then captained Spain to the 2026 FIFA World Cup title and received the tournament’s Golden Ball after La Roja defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final on July 19.

Barcelona Move Brings Rodri Back to Spanish Football

The transfer represents a return to LaLiga for Rodri seven years after he left Atletico Madrid for Manchester City in 2019.

City paid approximately £62.8m for the midfielder at the time, meaning the club are now set to recover a fee broadly comparable to their original investment despite Rodri being 30 and entering the final year of his contract.

Barcelona’s decision to commit more than £65m to the deal underlines Rodri’s continued importance at elite level.

The 2026 World Cup added another major achievement. Rodri led Spain as captain during their successful campaign in North America and was awarded FIFA’s Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. FIFA described him as central to Spain’s control of matches as they completed their run by defeating defending champions Argentina in the final.

Rodri’s influence on Spain’s World Cup triumph was also reflected statistically. FIFA’s tournament data ranked him first for passes with 799 and first for total distance covered at more than 96 kilometres, reinforcing his importance to Spain both in possession and without the ball.

That combination of the World Cup, European Championship, Champions League, Premier League and Ballon d’Or places Rodri in exceptionally distinguished company. Manchester City have described him as the first men’s player to complete that particular collection of honours.

Manchester City’s Midfield Rebuild Accelerates

Rodri’s departure also changes the complexion of Manchester City’s first summer under Enzo Maresca.

The former Chelsea coach succeeded Pep Guardiola ahead of the 2026/27 campaign and now faces the challenge of restructuring a midfield that had been fundamental to City’s previous era. England midfielder Elliot Anderson arrived from Nottingham Forest in a £116m transfer, a British record according to the figures reported around the deal. His profile offers City physicality, ball-carrying ability and greater mobility through central areas, although replacing Rodri’s tactical influence is unlikely to be a task assigned to one player alone.

City also remain interested in Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez represents the most expensive potential option. Chelsea value the Argentina international at around £120m and had imposed a Friday deadline for City to submit an offer. That deadline passed without a bid, leading Chelsea to expect Fernandez to remain at Stamford Bridge for the 2026/27 season. City’s interest, however, has not necessarily disappeared following the agreement to sell Rodri.

Another midfield departure is also progressing, with Tijjani Reijnders expected to join Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah in a deal reported to be worth approximately £51m. The Netherlands international’s proposed exit, combined with Rodri’s move, increases the importance of City’s recruitment during the closing stages of the transfer window.

Why Rodri’s Departure Matters Beyond the Transfer Fee

The £65.4m fee gives Manchester City additional flexibility in the market, but Rodri’s value to the team cannot be measured simply against the price received.

Anderson can become an important component of Maresca’s midfield, while Bouaddi would offer another highly rated option with considerable development potential. Fernandez, should City eventually reopen negotiations with Chelsea, would provide a different type of midfielder capable of progressing possession and influencing games higher up the pitch.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are acquiring a midfielder whose experience extends well beyond domestic success. Rodri arrives as a Champions League winner, European champion, World Cup winner and former Ballon d’Or recipient, with extensive experience controlling matches at the highest level.
