Inter Milan have reached an agreement with Liverpool to sign midfielder Curtis Jones in a deal worth up to €35 million, bringing the 25-year-old closer to ending his journey with his boyhood club.

The agreement consists of an initial €30 million payment, with a further €5 million available through add-ons. Liverpool have also negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of the transfer.

Jones is expected to travel to Italy on Thursday to undergo a medical before completing the move to the Serie A champions.

The deal represents a significant step forward in negotiations between the two clubs after Liverpool rejected an earlier approach from Inter in June. The Italian side initially proposed a package worth around €25 million, but that fell short of Liverpool’s valuation.

At the time, the Premier League club were seeking approximately £35 million for Jones despite the midfielder entering the final year of his contract.

Inter subsequently returned with an improved proposal. Liverpool had indicated that an offer comparable to the approximately £30 million package Inter paid Tottenham Hotspur for Djed Spence could provide the basis for an agreement, and the latest negotiations have now produced a deal.

Inter Renew Long-Standing Interest in Jones

Inter’s pursuit of Jones did not begin this summer.

The Italian club explored a move for the midfielder during the January transfer window, proposing a loan arrangement that could have led to a permanent transfer. Liverpool rejected that approach and kept Jones for the remainder of the campaign.

His situation has since changed as he searches for more consistent first-team football.

Jones featured 49 times across all competitions last season, demonstrating his continued importance to Liverpool’s squad. Regular Premier League starts, however, proved more difficult to secure. He started 18 league matches as competition for places in midfield limited his opportunities under Arne Slot.

A move to Milan therefore offers Jones the opportunity to establish himself in a different tactical environment while competing for one of Europe’s leading clubs.

For Inter, his ability to operate in several midfield roles provides additional depth and technical quality as the Serie A champions strengthen their squad.

Jones Set to End 16-Year Liverpool Career

The transfer would bring Jones’ 16-year association with Liverpool to an end.

Born in Liverpool, he joined the club’s academy at just nine years old and progressed through the youth system before making his senior debut under Jurgen Klopp in 2019.

Jones has since accumulated 228 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions with 22 goals, developing from a highly rated academy prospect into an established member of the senior squad.

His technical ability, close control and willingness to receive possession in congested areas made him a useful option across several midfield positions. However, sustained competition for starting places prevented him from becoming an automatic selection. Players such as Fabinho, Henderson, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch made it hard for Jones to find a place in the starting eleven.

With only one year remaining on his contract, this summer presented Liverpool with an important decision. Allowing Jones to enter the final months of his deal would have increased the possibility of losing a homegrown player for a significantly reduced fee, or potentially for nothing at the end of his contract.

The agreed package allows Liverpool to secure a substantial return for an academy graduate while the 10 per cent sell-on provision could provide additional value should Jones later leave Inter.

Inter Continue to Recruit From the Premier League

Jones is open to the move as he looks for a fresh challenge away from Anfield.

If the remaining formalities are completed, he will become the third English player to join Inter during the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of John Stones and Djed Spence.

The growing English contingent adds another dimension to Inter’s squad as the club prepares to defend its Serie A title and compete again on the European stage.

For Jones, the transfer represents a significant change after spending the overwhelming majority of his football career at Liverpool. Moving from the Premier League to Serie A will bring different tactical demands, but his extensive senior experience means Inter are acquiring a midfielder who has already accumulated more than 200 appearances for one of England’s biggest clubs.

For Inter, his ability to operate in several midfield roles provides additional depth and technical quality. Curtis Jones could bring greater balance and versatility to Inter Milan’s midfield. His ability to retain possession under pressure, carry the ball through midfield and contribute defensively would give Inter a useful link between their deeper midfielders and attacking players. Jones can operate in several central roles, allowing him to complement the creativity of Hakan Çalhanoğlu and the energy of Nicolò Barella rather than competing directly with either. His mobility and ball-carrying could also help Inter progress through pressure while maintaining enough defensive discipline to keep the midfield compact, adding a different dimension to Cristian Chivu’s options.

With an agreement now in place between Liverpool and Inter, Jones’ medical and the completion of the remaining contractual formalities are the final steps before his move to Milan can be confirmed.
