Arsenal have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51 million, boosting Mikel Arteta’s defensive options by providing a firm backup in case of any injuries.
Konsa has agreed on a four-year contract with the option of an additional season after completing his medical. His move ends a spell that lasted seven years at Villa Park and is a good tactical transfer for Arsenal, with Konsa capable of playing both at centre-back and right-back, something managers always look for.
Konsa becomes the fifth addition of the summer transfer window for Arsenal, after the arrival of Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen and other deals for Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis and Bruno Guimarães.
Villa had initially been seeking around £60 million, but negotiations successfully ended with an agreement worth £51 million.
Defensive Injuries Accelerate Arsenal’s Recruitment
Arsenal’s signing of another defender became very important following injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber.
Saliba is expected to be unavailable for a long period, while Timber remains sidelined with a long-term groin problem.
Their absence limited Arteta’s options on the right side of his defence and created a need for a player who can play in more than one position. Konsa fits those requirements since he has shown that he can move across to right-back when required, allowing Arsenal greater flexibility when managing injuries, rotation and fixture congestion, since Arsenal will be battling to win all the competitions available this year.
The Gunners also considered Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah before ultimately prioritising Konsa, whose extensive Premier League experience offered Arsenal a more immediately established option.
Konsa has played 231 Premier League games, where he has proved himself as one of Aston Villa’s most important defenders.
He played in 34 league matches during the 2025/26 campaign, which is an impressive record of availability and that’s the consistency Arsenal are looking for.
Konsa has a Premier League record of eight goals and two assists, although his primary value remains his defensive positioning, composure in possession and ability to operate within different structures.
Konsa’s career has been on the right track since he moved from Charlton Athletic’s academy. He joined Brentford in 2018 before going to Aston Villa one year later, where he developed and represented the England national team.
Competition Increases Across Arsenal’s Back Line
Arsenal already have Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White available to cover the right side of defence, but adding Konsa gives Arteta another experienced alternative during a tough season.
White’s injury problems over recent seasons make additional depth more valuable, while Mosquera has at times been required to play outside his preferred role.
The young Spaniard was forced to play in an unfamiliar position during Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, highlighting the problems that can emerge when injuries reduce Arteta’s options in major matches.
Konsa should provide a more natural solution in those situations. His ability to play at centre-back or shift wider as a right-back means Arsenal can rotate without significantly breaking their defensive structure, while his Premier League experience reduces the risk of a difficult adaptation.
His arrival should also increase competition once Saliba and Timber return, giving Arteta several combinations involving Gabriel, Saliba, Konsa, Hincapié, Mosquera, White and Timber.
Arsenal Move Closer to Completing Summer Business
The Konsa deal represents another significant investment from Arsenal as the club builds a squad capable of defending its Premier League title while challenging again in Europe.
Rather than recruiting purely for the starting XI, Arsenal’s summer strategy has increasingly focused on creating high-level competition throughout the squad.
Konsa addresses one of the remaining areas of concern by providing both positional versatility and substantial experience in English football. With the defender now secured, Arsenal appear to have completed one of the most important pieces of their summer recruitment.
Finally, Arteta found what he was looking for, but who knows, there might be a chance for more signings.
