Manchester United surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3–2 against Brighton at Old Trafford, exiting the Carabao Cup and raising further questions about Michael Carrick’s difficult start to the season.

The contrast between midfield recruitment and defensive vulnerability is particularly relevant. Adding options in possession offers limited protection when the team cannot respond effectively after losing the ball.
Fulham Becomes an Important Early Test
United’s opening four Premier League matches have produced just one victory, a 5–2 win over Ipswich in which they struggled to take control for much of the first hour.
The forthcoming trip to Fulham therefore carries added significance. Carrick needs a result, but the performance must also demonstrate that United can sustain their intensity and manage difficult periods without losing their defensive structure.
