Thomas Tuchel believes Jude Bellingham’s fiery approach brings out his best football, but the England manager will assess the midfielder’s fitness before deciding how heavily to use him during a demanding Nations League schedule. AFP
England face the Czech Republic in Prague on Tuesday, September 29, looking to respond to their 3–2 defeat against Spain at Wembley. Saturday’s match was their first appearance since the World Cup and saw them surrender a half-time lead against the reigning world champions. England Football
Tuchel Welcomes Bellingham’s Competitive Edge
Bellingham’s performance against Spain included a heated exchange with his Real Madrid team-mate Marc Cucurella. Rather than viewing those confrontations as a distraction, Tuchel believes they can sharpen the midfielder’s focus and raise his level.
“It’s better if he plays with a bit of rage,” Tuchel said.
The England boss suggested Bellingham sometimes seeks out competitive exchanges to ignite his performance. He also explained that club friendships take a back seat when the midfielder represents his country, with winning his priority throughout the match. AFP
Bellingham continued to threaten Spain until the closing stages, forcing a late save from Unai Simón. His display followed his recognition as England’s Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Bellingham’s Workload Will Be Assessed
Tuchel would like the 23-year-old to feature in all four matches during the autumn camp, but acknowledged that the compressed schedule presents a physical challenge.
The manager said Bellingham has not yet faced that concentration of matches this season. His high-intensity style also leaves little scope for conserving energy while on the pitch.
“We will not put Jude at risk,” Tuchel said, explaining that England’s physiotherapists would help assess his readiness before selection decisions are made.
England Boss Would Prefer to Limit Rotation
Harry Kane is also eager to start all four matches, according to Tuchel. However, with England playing four Nations League fixtures in 11 days, the manager accepts that maintaining the same starting line-up may not be possible.
His preference is to retain a core of at least six or seven starters, giving them responsibility and demonstrating confidence in their ability to deliver. Any changes will depend on how the players recover between matches.
After Tuesday’s trip to the Czech Republic, England visit Croatia on October 3 before returning to Wembley for the reverse fixture against the Czechs on October 6. Those games complete an intensive opening phase of their Nations League campaign. England Football
