Real Madrid have strengthened their position in the race to sign RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande after Paris Saint-Germain formally withdrew from negotiations for the highly rated Ivory Coast international.

The Spanish club have already agreed personal terms with the 19-year-old and are continuing discussions with Leipzig in an attempt to complete one of the summer’s most significant transfers. However, no final agreement between the clubs has yet been confirmed, and Leipzig’s valuation remains the principal obstacle.

According to Sky Sports, Madrid have already seen an offer worth £85.4 million (€100 million) rejected. The Bundesliga club are demanding a considerably higher fee before considering the sale of a player who only arrived in Germany in July 2025.

PSG End Interest Over Financial Demands

PSG had previously appeared well placed to secure Diomande’s signature. The winger reportedly indicated a preference for a move to Paris earlier in the transfer window and reached terms over a prospective contract running until 2031.

The situation changed after Real Madrid accelerated their interest and reached their own agreement with the player. PSG subsequently confirmed that they had withdrawn their interest, citing concerns over the transfer fee, salary demands and the effect a deal could have on their financial and squad-planning principles.

PSG’s decision has removed Madrid’s most advanced competitor, but it does not mean the transfer is complete. Real must still meet Leipzig’s demands, finalise the structure of the payment and arrange the player’s medical examinations before the move can be formally announced.

Reports differ slightly regarding the structure of Madrid’s rejected proposal. Sky Sports values it at €100 million, while other reporting describes an initial package of €90 million plus €10 million in potential add-ons. In either case, Leipzig have made it clear that the opening offer was insufficient.

Diomande’s Bundesliga Breakthrough Explains Valuation

Leipzig’s negotiating position has been strengthened by Diomande’s remarkable development during his first season in Germany.

The right-footed winger registered 12 goals and eight assists across 33 Bundesliga appearances in 2025/26. His 20 direct goal contributions arrived in 2,476 minutes, equivalent to approximately one goal or assist every 124 league minutes. He also started 28 matches and recorded an average FotMob rating of 7.61.

Those performances helped Leipzig secure qualification for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League and established Diomande as one of the Bundesliga’s most productive young attackers.

At 19 years and 114 days, he became the fourth-youngest player in Bundesliga history to reach double figures for goals in a single season. That combination of age, athletic potential and immediate productivity has allowed Leipzig to demand a substantial return on their investment.

Diomande’s rise has been particularly striking because of how little senior experience he possessed before moving to Germany.

He made only 10 first-team appearances for Leganés, scoring twice and providing one assist, before Leipzig activated his release clause in July 2025. Within one season, he had progressed from a recently relegated LaLiga side to becoming a transfer target for several of Europe’s wealthiest clubs.

World Cup Performances Raise International Profile

Diomande’s reputation was further enhanced during Ivory Coast’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

He featured prominently during the tournament and provided an assist in the 2-0 victory over Curaçao. His performances followed a productive first year at senior international level, with FotMob listing him at 14 appearances and three goals for Ivory Coast since his debut in 2025.

Although his statistical output in Germany had already attracted elite-level attention, the World Cup gave Diomande an opportunity to demonstrate his pace, directness and decision-making against international opposition.

His playing profile also helps explain Madrid’s determination to complete the deal. Diomande can provide width, accelerate transitions and attack defenders directly, while his Bundesliga numbers show that his game already contains meaningful end product.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City Retain Interest

Liverpool have also explored a deal for Diomande but are reportedly unwilling to exceed approximately £85 million. Arsenal and Manchester City have remained interested, although neither Premier League club currently appears as advanced as Real Madrid.

Madrid’s progress represents another important step in the club’s summer rebuild under José Mourinho. Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella have already been added as the Spanish club reshape their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Diomande would bring a younger attacking profile to that recruitment programme. However, the size of Leipzig’s asking price means Madrid must determine how far they are prepared to go for a player with only one full Bundesliga season behind him.

Wider Transfer Market Could Be Affected

The negotiations may also influence the futures of other high-profile forwards.

Arsenal are reportedly assessing the possibility of signing Vinícius Júnior, although there has been no formal club-to-club contact with Real Madrid. The Brazilian has entered the final year of his contract, while Arsenal are also examining alternatives including Julián Álvarez, Bradley Barcola and Diomande himself.

Real have additionally been linked with Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, but Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has publicly dismissed the possibility of a summer departure. Freund stated that Olise remains an important part of Bayern’s plans for the coming season.

For now, Diomande remains Madrid’s most immediate attacking target. PSG’s withdrawal has significantly simplified the competition for his signature, but Leipzig retain control of the process and have shown no willingness to accept a discounted fee.

Until a club agreement and medical are completed, the transfer should be regarded as advanced rather than finalised.
