Hassan also criticised the lack of VAR intervention during Egypt’s penalty appeals’

“Our penalty wasn’t even checked by VAR, and our second goal was disallowed for reasons we still don’t understand. Everyone saw the shirt being pulled.”

The coach received a yellow card during stoppage time after protesting Argentina’s winner from the technical area.

Claims of External Pressure

Hassan also suggested that pre-match discussions surrounding the appointment of the referee may have affected the officiating.

“It was clear that the pressure placed on the referee before the match succeeded. We were the better team in many aspects, but there were internal factors on the pitch and external influences before the game.”

The former Egypt international insisted Argentina did not deserve to advance based on the overall balance of play.

“Argentina’s victory was entirely undeserved.”

He added that the experience had left him unwilling to watch the remainder of the competition.

“When I return home, I won’t watch another match in this World Cup because I don’t believe there is justice in it.”

FIFA had not issued a public response to Hassan’s comments at the time of publication.

Forward Zizo, who scored once and also saw another effort ruled out, echoed his coach’s disappointment following the defeat.

Asked whether his emotions after the final whistle were caused by the elimination or the refereeing decisions, he replied:

“Both. We were treated unfairly today, and everyone saw it.”

Although reluctant to focus solely on the officials, the attacker admitted Egypt struggled to understand several key decisions.

“We were leading 2-0, and then everything seemed to go against us. I still don’t know why the second goal was disallowed.”

He also pointed directly to the penalty incident that immediately preceded Argentina’s decisive counterattack.

“We had a penalty, and instead it became the counterattack that led to their goal.”

Despite the controversy, Argentina extended their title defence by producing one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
